I get this question all the time:
“I want to support Black-owned businesses, but where do I even start?”
Sometimes it comes with frustration.
Sometimes with guilt.
But mostly, it comes from good intentions trying to find a path forward.
So let me offer a new way to think about it.
—
First: Broaden What “Start” Even Means
Supporting Black businesses doesn’t always mean walking into a storefront with a sign that says “Black-owned.” It’s bigger than that.
Start might look like:
* Tipping the kid who cuts your grass a little extra because you see his hustle.
* Hiring the local barber instead of heading to a chain.
* Buying fruit from the lady outside the salon—because that’s her business.
* Sharing a link to a Black-owned brand, even if you didn’t buy (yet).
* Downloading a digital tool from a Black creator to help run your own business better.
None of those require a ZIP code search.
They require a shift in mindset.
You’re not just buying things—you’re putting money into Black opportunity.

Then: Narrow the “Where” to Your Actual Community
You don’t have to look far. You don’t need a spreadsheet or a long list.
But when you’re ready to go deeper, Know Black is here to guide you.
Start with where you already are: Your block – Who’s out here making moves?
Your neighborhood – Who do your neighbors recommend?
Your child’s school – Is there a parent who runs a side hustle? A coach who sells merch?
Your job – Could you advocate for Black-owned vendors or suppliers?
Your church or community center – Who’s cooking for the events? Hosting classes? Designing the flyers?
That’s community.
That’s the “where.”
And that’s where real support starts to take root.

It’s Not About Perfection. It’s About Practice.
You don’t have to overhaul your whole life in one day.
But if you start looking through a lens of intention, you’ll be shocked how much was right in front of you all along.
Start with the people you already know.
The spaces you already occupy.
The everyday moments that already exist.

What Comes Next?
If you want help getting started—beyond the people you already know—I’ve got you.
Know Black was built to make discovery easier.
It’s where culture meets commerce, curated with purpose.
So whether you’re buying something, sharing something, or just learning—you’re building something.
And that’s what matters most.
Black opportunity lives everywhere.
Start where you are. Then keep going.
Start with what you already know. Then come to Know Black to go deeper.
